For the first time since Edward’s and Michael’s deaths, Brenna woke without the weight of dread and despair. She lay in bed and allowed the sensation to wash over her. Her doctor had said the first months of grief were the worst, but she’d find ways to cope, and each day would be better than the previous one. But he’d warned her, too, that she’d always have those days when she’d fall into depression. This morning wasn’t one of them, however. She had things to do, and knowing she might see Alex later in the day excited her. She cleaned up and headed out to find the warehouses Alex had told her to visit for her new appliances.

It was a warm November day, and she’d yet to put the top up on her Jeep since she’d purchased it. Enjoying the sunshine, she cruised through an industrial district of south Phoenix with the wind in her hair. She found the places easily, and the men were helpful. After she told them she was a friend of Alex Santana, they guaranteed the appliances would be delivered and installed by the next Tuesday morning. After accomplishing that task, she retrieved the address for the Mesa Historical Society she’d programmed into her GPS. The place was on the other side of town, but it was a beautiful day, so she didn’t mind the drive.

Forty-five minutes later, she pulled up to the old adobe building in downtown Mesa. Inside, she spoke to a receptionist about her find at the Poulsen property, then had a brief discussion with the society’s director. He was interested in the documents and photos and told her he’d send one of the volunteers to the house after the Thanksgiving holiday to take a look. She asked about using the archives to do some research, and he was happy to give her access, particularly after she offered a large donation to the historical society’s general fund. At the back of the building where the archives and stacks were located, she looked around, unsure where to begin. She decided to ask for help from the library’s research desk.

“Excuse me, miss?” Brenna said. “I’m trying to find something, anything, on the Poulsen Citrus Grove.”

The young woman typed a few things on her computer, studied the screen. “I think there may be some legal documents, a few newspaper articles. I could pull them for you if you’d like.”

Brenna read her name tag. “Thank you, Sadie. Have you volunteered here long?”

“A few semesters. I’m a history major at ASU. This work counts toward my practicum.”

“Listen, Sadie, I’m sure you have tasks you need to accomplish as part of your work here, but if you could put in extra time and find information on the property, on the family, on anyone who worked for them, I’d be willing to pay you in cash.”

Brenna exchanged phone numbers with her, thanked her again, and slid her some large bills as a down payment. Back in her Jeep, she prepared to drive to the property.
